How Leaders Regain Clarity Under Pressure
In the middle of chaos (alarms, patients, comms traffic), your brain wants to react and rush. But quick doesn’t always mean clear. The best emergency leaders know how to pause without losing pace.
Here’s a 30-second “decision reset” you can teach your team this week to stay centered.
- 🕐 1-10s: Stop the noise. Step back…literally. Take a controlled breath and view the scene from a broader perspective. Ask yourself: What is the most time-sensitive priority right now? Not the most complicated, but the most urgent.
- 🕑 11-20s: Simplify the next move…deliberately. State your decision aloud in one sentence: “We’ll open the second triage lane and reassign two staff.” Clarity reduces hesitation and keeps your team synced.
- 🕒 21- 30s: Confirm, then commit. Double-check: Does this move solve the right problem? If yes, go all in.
The reset prevents reaction loops and restores calm command presence.
